Media Matters: Fetishizing off-center centrism

When the vote was passed last week on the stimulus package, not once did the media concern themselves with what the package consist of,or how it would help our economy. Instead, the Beltway journalist only wanted to know why the Republicans did not vote for it.

For years Democrats have failed to get Republicans support on passing any bills in the pass. As, President Obama reached out for bipartisanship, he scored a big zero. The president is trying to reach out to the Republican party for support an right away you see the distinction instantly.

As you can see the media is not really focusing on the stimulus package at all. They are not interested in any alterations that might be unacceptable to President Obama. That is not important obviously, but "would the president veto a bill that didn't have the Republicans support," was more important.

Media matters report despite insistence by members of the media, it is a conservative or "center-right country, "Americans are progressive across a wide range of controversial issues, and are growing progressive all the time.

  1. Are these journalists convinced that the average American will not understand what is in the stimulus package anyway, so why not just concentrate on the most controversial aspect of the vote? Is the economy so bad that these journalists are hoping to sell more papers by focusing on the conflict rather than content aspect of news? I'm not sure what makes me more discouraged--that sensation sells or that the Republications haven't yet outgrown the Newt Gingrich style of bipartisan politics with their "them versus us" mentality. Actually, maybe that's why the journalists are focusing on the Republicans; we need action in this country by both parties. Maybe the spotlight should shine negatively on the party that votes the "party line" over taking actions that would help the most people. You can see I'm still bitter over the last eight years!

  2. Here here! I am too. The only reason the republicans are not supporting it is because Obama is a Democrat and the democrats own everything. We are never going to get over this them versus us style. Our country is pretty much what have you done for me lately. We do need some action in this country and Obama is afraid to pull the trigger this quick into his term. Good post.

  3. I can't say i'm surprised. Once again, the media just tries to get the ratings instead of the fact. And what probably will happen if they don't get their act together, is lose their audience completely. It isn't new news that Republicans and Democrats disagree. Obviously that is why they are competetors, and honestly, i believe people are getting to the point where they see what the media is trying to do and are turning their televisions off. I believe in the old saying, "The truth will set you free." hopefully a daring broadcasting company is out there who will go against the current media format, and break the rules, to inform America of what really matters instead of a high school cat-fight. I am completely appalled by the way the media covered this bill. Especially when it has the potential, in the right hands, to turn our economy upside-down. Kudos on finding this article!

  4. I was very surprised that the media didn't mention what was in the stimulus package as well, considering how bad our economy is. It seems that the media is always trying to focus negative stuff and drama. I'm pretty sure that every American wasn't surprised to find out that Obama didn't get one Republican vote for the new deal. But I'm hoping this stimulus can turn things around.
